15 Ways to raise your vibration
Ever had the feeling that someone was radiating “good vibes”, felt attracted towards that person, felt happier and lighter just by being around them? Well, they probably had “good vibes”, or, to put it another way, were vibrating at a higher frequency.
Everything in this universe is made up of energy. You are no exception. When going into the inner workings of an atom, quantum physics pointed out that they are ultimately made up of energy waves. Constantly, light and energy is being absorbed and transmitted whilst having a certain vibration or frequency.
What does this mean for you? Well, since everything has a certain frequency or vibration to it, so do you. So does every cell of your being, so do your feelings and so do your thoughts.
Something that vibrates at a lower frequency feels heavy. States of sadness or worry are categorized as low-vibrational states. Things that vibrate in a higher frequency feel light. Love, bliss or gratitude would fall under that category.
It is normal to be ranging in different vibrational states from time to time. But you can lift up your vibration by doing a few simple things. I took most of my information from Dr. David Hawkins, an author and researcher on consciousness and spirituality as well as Frederick Dodson, also a researcher on consciousness who got really popular through his teachings of Reality Creation. Both invented their own version of a scale of consciousness (they are very similar to each other). Most of their work is based on the principle that everything vibrates at a certain frequency.
1. Be very careful on what you consume through media
Prana, in the Yogic tradition, is the life force. We primarily take Prana in through our breath and our food. But especially nowadays, we consume much more than just that. Be aware of what you take in on a daily basis: What kind of films do you watch? Are they violent and chaotic? Maybe next time, try and reach for something inspiring, calming, serene. Same goes for you social media. What is on your instagram feed? How do you feel after you scrolled through it?
Same thing for music. I used to listen to lots of Hip-hop and electronic music. I still love it, but I found myself rather agitated afterwards. Someday, I realized a huge difference after listening to classical music (Dodson scaled this kind of music as high vibrational as well). The hugest difference I realized after listening to sung Mantras. Low and behold, music transfers different frequencies as well. Try listening to some good piano or some Mantra. At least for me, there is always a huge shift in how I feel.
Of course, the best thing for you would be to not watch television, use social media or electronics in general. But realistically, we live in a modern age and it does no good to anyone in denying that (and the advantages it brings, too!). Just try to be more mindful in how you use it.
2. Meditation
You’re probably not surprised to find this one in here. According to Hawkins, things that are true are vibrating in higher frequency. Through meditation, you come in close contact with your true being or essence. This happens through being fully present and realizing that you, in fact, are awareness.
Secondly, Meditation has multiple other benefits that play a part in raising your vibration. You become free of your mind chatter, your brain waves change, your nervous system calms down, you feel more peaceful, only to name a few. These are all high vibrational states to be in.
If you think Meditation isn’t for you, you may simply haven’t found the right technique that works for you. Check out this article If you want to know about different meditation styles.
Lastly, have you ever been around a Guru? Someone that is said to be awakened and on the path to enlightenment? Being around those people oftentimes makes one feel very calm and filled with bliss. Their sole presence can make a huge difference for the people around them.
3. Gratitude
If you want a quick shift in vibration and you state of being, try gratitude. Literally, you can try it right now. Look away from your screen, take a deep breath.
Think of at least 5 things you are grateful for in this particular moment (i.e the way the sun shines through your room, a pet, people that are close to you, the fact that you are in physical safety). Really feel gratitude for those things – you will feel immensely better afterwards.
Start making gratitude a habit. Before going to bed, write down or at least think of things you are grateful for. It will lead to a huge shift in how you experience your reality, heighten your sense of awareness and help you be more present.
4. Eat and Drink clean
Through eating and drinking, we take in prana or life force. Food carries different gunas, or energy qualities with them.
Foods that are Tamas like poor meat, processed foods, alcohol or nicotine will transfer these quality onto you. It lowers your vibration, makes you feel tired, sluggish and sad. On the other hand, Foods that are Sattvic like fresh organic fruits and vegetables will help raise your vibration, give you energy, make you feel happy and nourished.
You can also view this from a more medicinal point of view. Your body needs nourishment, vitamins and water. It thrives on it and helps your organs function properly. A sick body is tired and needs all its energy for healing. A body fed with toxins focuses on fighting them off. And with a sick body, a sick mind will follow.
5. Create
Creativity is listed as a high vibrational state. As children, we were all creative. We all played role plays, made a meal out of dirt and plants or thought of fireflies as little fairies. Creativity is something innate in us which cannot be lost, but oftentimes has been suppressed and boxed up.
There are many reasons why we don’t express creativity anymore. Maybe we think we are not good enough or that some masterpiece has to come out of it. Maybe we get so caught up in being productive that we completely neglected the joy of sitting in silence and doodling, knitting, writing (…).
Being emerged in a creative task (like writing or knitting) will likely lead to you experiencing Flow, a highly enjoyable, blisfull and healthy state. It boosts your mood, floods your body with dopamine (the feel-good hormone), lowers anxiety and even lowers your heart rate. Accomplishing a task will boost your sense of self-efficacy and lead to you being more productive and active in your life.
“When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy.”
Rumi

6. Love
Love is one of the highest vibrational states one can be in. Most spiritual and religious teachings revolve around the concept of love. Love is creation and freedom. The best thing is, you don’t need another person to experience love. Love is innate inside you and you can cultivate this feeling in any moment at any time.
You can feel love for anyone and anything. For cultivating this feeling, think about someone very close to you. Really let that feeling rise in your chest and grow. Think about someone who loves you deeply and let yourself be wrapped in that warm and safe energy. Feel love for yourself.
After some time, you will be able to tap into that feeling without thinking about a specific person. You’ll simply feel love. Love can pull you out of your darkest moments and soothe pain like not much else can.
7. Dance
This one is huge for me. A few months ago, I started dancing as part of my yoga teacher training and I did not stop since. I dance every day. You don’t need to be a great dancer or have any background education in it. Dancing is a way to express yourself creatively, it is an art from.
Put on some of your favorite tunes and just dance it out. Try it. You may feel silly at first, but that feeling quickly resides after you whole being is filled with joy and freedom. Dancing helps to get rid of stagnant energies and emotions, it moves your body naturally.
Dance has been a part of many ancient cultures. The combination of physical activity and rhythm can induce a trance state. As a kid, we all danced around a lot. We still love dancing it out with our friends. So now, just dance it out yourself.
[Life] is a dance, and when you are dancing, you are not intent on getting somewhere. The meaning and purpose of dancing is the dance.
Alan Watts
8. Take a honest look at your relationships
We are highly influenced by the people around us. They shape who we are. Close relationships are crucial for living a healthy, happy life, as we are a social species.
Sometimes, some people around us can be very toxic. This doesn’t have to be intentional. If you notice yourself feeling down when being with a certain person, maybe it’s time for you to take honest look at whether or not you want to keep that person in your life.
People that are always nagging or being negative about life will bring you down with them eventually. Sometimes, you can’t even pinpoint what it is, but someone just isn’t on the same wavelength as you. Whatever it is, setting healthy boundaries for yourself is something many of us have to learn.
9. Go outside
Going outside. Especially being in nature will benefit you in so many ways. You’ll get some movement in, you’ll get some sunshine on your face and some fresh air. I probably don’t have to tell you all the healing benefits of nature for your mind, body and soul.
10. Have beauty around you
Your surroundings are important for your mood, vibration and general well-being. You know that fresh, motivating feeling after having cleaned your room? Or that instant shift you feel after entering a beautiful building filled with art? Dodson has put Beauty and Aesthetically pleasing things high on his scale of consciousness.
Beauty and art are not a new-age phenomenon. Throughout many cultures and for a very long time, humans decorated their surroundings in a way. So go ahead and clean your room, put up some art and inspiring quotes or symbols. Have your own sanctuary in which you can recharge yourself when in need.
11. Read spiritual / inspiring stuff
Over the past few months, I learned that one thing that really helped me through and out of some very dark moments is reading on spirituality. The truth behind those words really resonates and awaken parts inside myself that simply make whatever I’m going through at the moment suddenly seem very trivial.
If you have some favorite authors, philosophers, gurus (…), then give it a try by listening to them when you feel down. Being reminded of things that your inner being considers as fundamentally true can really shift your consciousness. It can give you hope, a different perspective on your situation and inspiration.
Some of my favorites would be: Poems and quotes of Rumi, Reading the Yoga Sutras, reading the Tao Te Ching and listening to Thich Nhat Hanh.
12. Aromatherapy
Scents are a very powerful tool to change how we feel. They influence the limbic system which is closely associated with emotions and motivation. In many cultures and throughout many years, herbs and especially their scents are used as powerful healing tools.
The easiest form to use scents would be in form of essential oils. Just make sure they are from an organic and sustainable source. You can also make essential oils yourself If you have the needed herb. It’s very easy to make and works just as well (I love my own lavender-essential oil!).
You can use essential oils in many different ways. Put them on your body (i.e wrist or soles of the feet) in a diluted form, put them in a diffuser, spray them mixed with water or simply inhale them from a safe distance. Make sure to check If your oils are safe to use around pets or babies, though!
13. Burn Palo Santo or White Sage
Those two plants are used in many rituals for cleansing, preparing the space or getting rid of bad energies. I use them myself and find a white-sage-cleaning-ritual every once in a while can really make a difference in how your surroundings feel.
Since your vibrations are influenced by the energies around you, it’s important to clean those up sometime. Palo Santo or White Sage supposedly do exactly that; they clean out negative energies. As always, please make sure they are from a sustainable source. I now only use white sage because I can easily dry the herbs out myself.
Final Words
Just like everything else in nature, we are in a constant exchange with our environment. I deeply believe that we are connected with the world around us through more than just our senses can grasp.
If you become aware of that fact, you might take some of those things in this article more serious. Little changes can make a huge difference in how we feel, think, act and ultimately in how we experience and shape our reality.
